INCOME TAX

COLLECTION IN AUSTRALIA. ONLY BY FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) CANBERRA, March 9. The Federal Treasurer, Mr Chiffley, announced that income tax would probably be collected only by the Federal Government from July 1. Simplicity in income tax collection and the maximum saving of manpower were the reasons for the proposed change. The Commonwealth would compensate the States on a basis not yet determined. The single tax scheme is expected to release for war work between 1000 and 2000 men from the taxation departments and a large number engaged privately in preparing tax returns.
