BOWLING

PARK CLUB i i NEW ZEALANDERS v. THE REST. SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENT. Although a high wind early in the afternoon,, and a keen green made the conditions very tricky, another most successful and enjoyable tourney again found the N.Z. teams on top against The Rest, winning 7 om of 10 games, and scoring 167 points to their opponents 130. Two games of 15 ends were played, the results being as follows (New Zealanders mentioned first in each instance):—First round: Wiltshire, G. Brown, Bell, H. Smith (s) beat Winhall, Ferguson, Vincent, Staniforth (s), 24/11; Andrews, Fenton, Buckley, Dixon (s) lost to McKenzie (sub.), Car-

pentcr, C. Ewington, Trevorrow (s). 6/15; White, Moore, O'Donnell, Kilgoui (s) beat Davis, Simpson (sub.), Leigh, Shearer (s), 16/10; Anstice, Braggins, Reader, H. Thompson (s) beat McErlich, Newton, Duckworth, E. Brown (s), 14/8; Wall, Spackman; Jenkins, Burke (s) beat Knowles, Taylor, Gibson, Carr (s), 20/12. Second round: H. Smith beat Trevorrow, 20/15; Burke lost to Staniforth, 16/26; Dixon beat Shearer, 16/7; Kilgoui’ lost to E. Brown, 17/19; H. Thompson beat Carr, 18/7. Spackman Cup (colts’ singles): Great interest has been taken in these games, which have been keenly contested, and the first year players have shown an all-round improvement. Further results are: G. Brown, so far unbeaten, defeated McErlich, 22/9; S. Lee beat White, 20/14. A 4 to Lee in the latter stages of the game proving too big

a hurdle for White, there being 12 singles scored in this game. P. Thompson, a first year player, remains unbeaten, and his match with G. Brown, last year’s winner, should be well worth witnessing. During the forthcoming week there will be ah invasion by the Masterton Club, when the Park Club will be called upon to defend the Bell Shield, Mutrie Cup and Wall Cup.

MASTERTON CLUB CHAMPION RINKS COMPETITION. (Notes by “The Bowler.”) One of the most interesting games of bowls witnessed on the Masterton Club’s green was played on Saturday ' afternoon. It was the provisional final in the champion rinks, and the teams taking part were: J. V. Gordon, F. Percy, W. Reid and W. Hendry (s), and H. Thomas, Wylie, A. Stabbings and E. Reid (s). W. Reid, acted as skip in place of W. Hendry, and F. Mills played as substitute for H. Thomas. The match was in doubt until the last bowl was played. The weather was perfect for bowls, the green was in excellent order, and the wind, which had been fairly heavy in the early part of the afternoon, dropped. The play generally was of a high order, and what struck me particularly, was the fine team work of each rink, each player doing his share. There was a large number of bowlers present to witness the game, and they were keenly interested. Mr W. Hendry’s team had two lives, there is still the final to be played, and I am sure the game will be worth watching. ‘ The details of the match are as follow;—On the 6th head E. Reid had a lead of 1 point, but on the 10 th head this lead was increased to 3 points, the scores being Reid 10, Hendry 7. This lead was reduced to 2 points on the 13th head, and on the 16th head, the difference was still the same. Hendry equalised the scores on the 18th head, but on the next head, Hendry put on 3 points, leaving him with. 3 points up and two heads to play. Reid notched 2 points on the 20th head, leaving Hendry lup and the last head. to play. The game was now at a most interesting stage, and Reid put on 3 points, . leaving his team the winners by the small margin of 2 points. Congratula- , tions to both teams on their fine dis- i play of bowling. ■

CLUB FOURS. Club fours games played on Saturday by members of the Masterton Bowling Club resulted as follow:— Blane, Compton, A. Hendry, W. Hendry (s) beat Palamontain, Cody, Doughty, eic y (s) 18/11; Bassett, de Castro, Wylie, Henderson (s) beat C. A. Hendry, Haycroft, Hearlc, Finlayson (s) 23/11; Holdsworth, Downes, Mills, Morton (s) beat Murdoch, Malmo, Bannister, E. J. Reed (s) 25/10; Dcnbee, Kerslake, Davies, Chapman cs? 'oeat Connell.
