Miss Jose Hosking, Church Street, Masterton, is visiting Paekakariki. Miss Betty Wells, Tirau, is staying with Miss Mary James, Upper Plain. Mrs F. R. Bodie, who has been staying at Tauranga, has returned to Masterton. Miss Kummer, Cole Street, Masterton, has returned from a visit to Wellington. Mr and Mrs H. McLaren, Paraparaumu Beach, have been spending a few days in Masterton. Mrs E. I. Chadwick, Colombo Road, Masterton, has received word that her son, Leading Aircraftman Hugh Wyatt Chadwick, of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, who had been for six months in Singapore, is safe and well. One of New Zealand's leading horticulturists and naturalists, Mr W. W. Smith, who was in charge of Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, for 12 years, died at the New Plymouth Public Hospital this week. He was recognised as an authority on the flora of the Dominion. Mr Smith, was born in Scotland in 1852. At the annual business meeting of the New Zealand Council of the British and Foreign Bible Society in Wellington Mi’ R. A. Laidlaw, Auckland, was appointed Dominion president. As he is absent on war duty,. Mr R. Lorimer Button, Wellington, was appointed deputy-president. The following officers were re-elected: Secretary, Mr C. W. Budd; treasurer, Mr P. E. Pattrick; solicitor, Mr E. P. Hay. A new president, Mr A. B. Buxton, was elected at the annual meeting of the Wellington District Law Society recently. The following other officers were elected:— Vice-president, Mr T. P. Cleary; treasurer, Mr E. P. Hay; Wellington members of the council, Messrs J. R. E. Bennett, H. R. Biss, A. M. Cousins, A. J. Luke. N. H.Mather, D. G. B. Morison, G. C. Phillips, W. PShorland, with Mr J. cW. Rutherford (Palmerston North), Mr J. Graham (Feilding), and Mr R. McKenzie (Masterton). The funeral of the late Mr M. J. Diggins took place at Masterton .this morning, the cortege being a large and representative one. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick's Church by the Rev. Father Moore, who also conducted the service at the graveside. The pall-bearers Were Messrs E. Hanley, J. Hunter, J. Hume, B. Ivcson, D. Fitzgerald and Percy Withers. A large number of wreaths were received testifying to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Among others, floral tributes were forwarded by the Catholic Club and the North Island District Executive Social Club, Public Service garage Wellington, Committee of the Catholic Social Services Club, the proprietor of the “Wairararapa Times-Age,” the staff of the "Wairarapa Times-Age,” the proprietors of the “Wairarapa Daily Times” Company, and staff of the “Wairarapa Daily Times” Company.
