RED CROSS SOCIETY
MASTERTON SUB-CENTRE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. A GENEROUS DONATION. At the monthly meeting of the Masterton Sub-Centre of the Red Cross Society. Mrs Tolhurst presided. The meeting was notified that two sewing machines had been purchased for use by the Hospital Group. A letter was received from Mr C. Oliver, enclosing a donation of £lOO and leaving to the discretion of the SubCentre the matter of deciding for what purpose this money should be used. The meeting expressed its gratitude to Mr Oliver for his generous support. It was decided that as the Sub-Centre had sufficient funds for their immediate requirements, this donation should be used for a branch of Red Cross work where urgent assistance was required, and as work amongst prisoners of war came under this heading, the donation was forwarded to the headquarters, Wellington, to be used for prisoner of war parcels. A letter was received from the Masterton Women’s Auxiliary of the Labour Party, nominating Mrs Robertson and Mrs Loader as their representatives on the Sub-Centre committee for the coming year. Mrs Tolhurst welcomed the two new representatives, and expressed appreciation of the support that the Auxiliary had given to the Red Cross Sub-Centre. Miss Hoffer, treasurer to the SubCentre, tendered her resignation. The resignation was accepted with regret, and on behalf of the Society Mrs Tolhurst thanked Miss Heifer for the assistance she had given. The meeting decided that Mr Brass, of the Accommodation and Evacuation Committee, be notified that the Red Cross Sub-Centre Sewing Group intended to build up a reserve of clothing and would be prepared to issue the same on receipt of orders from the secretary of the Accommodation and Evacuation Committee. It was reported that the various groups were carrying on their usual It was stated that the appeal for old linen and beads had brought forth a most generous response, and donors are thanked for their generous help. Linen is still needed, as the hospital group had offered to assist with the making of goods for the wardens’ posts. A returned soldier wrote thanking the hospital handcrafts committee for making his stay in the hospital brighter, and for having taught him interesting arts.
