PRISONERS OF WAR

INQUIRY OFFICE REPORT NO DIRECT COMMUNICATION WITH JAPAN. SUGGESTION TO RELATIVES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The number of prisoners recorded on the files of the Prisoners of War Inquiry Office is now: —Official, 5,903; unofficial, 64. The total is made up of: Army, 5,725; Air Force, 122; merchant seamen and civilians, 26; Navy, seven; miscellaneous, 23. It is stated that correspondence is being received freely in New Zealand from prisoners of war camps in Germany and examples of letters are given in the latest circular. The Next of Kin Office has received through the New Zealand Government advice that the Swiss Government has requested that no further inquiries regarding British subjects in Hong Kong and the Philippines should be addressed to them, as they are unable to take action and they desire that all possible steps be taken to terminate the flow of inquiries to them. The office again advises relatives and friends that every avenue is being explored to obtain information, but they must recognise the difficulty on account of there being no direct communication with Japan. The office through the International Red Cross at Geneva, has cabled inquiries regarding all matters affecting prisoners, the necessity for clothing and requests for any information by which they can be assisted from New Zealand.
