WILD CLAIMS
MADE BV JAPANESE BROADCASTS ALLEGED ALLIED NAVAL LOSSES. AUSTRALIAN MINISTER’S WARNING. (By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright) CANBERRA, March 4. The Minister of the Navy, Mr Makin, today urged radio listeners to ignore the Tokio broadcasts concerning Japanese naval successes. He sai the Japanese, fully exercising their faculty for imitation, were slavishly copying the German method of propaganda and wholesale exaggeration. , . . The latest instance, he said, was Tokio’s absurd claim of having sunk 23 Allied vessels in East Indies waters, including two Australian cruisers. Mr Makin added that it must be borne in mind that many of the wild statements by the enemy were aimed at obtaining important information. The Australian Government had no intention of satisfying Japan s curiosity, and therefore he warned listeners to beware of the Tokio broadcasts and apply the proverbial grain of salt to anything and everything emanating from Tokio.
