Cost of Living Index.

The cost of living index in Canada again shows a decline. The January 2 index, as computed by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, stood at 115.4 against. 115.8 on December 1. Over the period between October 1, 1941, and January 2, 1942, living costs showed a net drop of one tenth of a point. This means that the existing cost of living bonus remains unchanged for three months. “The figure is encouraging,” comments Mr Donald Gordon, chairman of the War Time Prices and Trade Board. “It reflects some normal seasonal trends and perhaps some effect of the price ceiling, but it is too early to throw our caps in the air and it is dangerously optimistic to think that the inflationary spiral has been cut off.”
