Vital statistics registered in Masterton last month were, those for the corresponding period of last year being given in parentheses:—Births, 22 (17); deaths, 13 (22); marriages, 3 (7). Maori Women’s Auxiliary. The second of a series of euchre tournaments which are to be put on every week was held last night by the Maori Women’s War Auxiliary in the Orange Hall. The evening was quite successful. The proceeds are in aid of a fund for sending parcels to soldiers overseas. Champion Trotter Dead. Certissimus, who was regarded as the greatest trotter of his age raced in New Zealand, died at Timaru last night. The horse met with an accident last week when returning from a work-out on a private track at Pleasant Point. When he was on the road an overcheck caught in a shaft, and the horse reared and fell, receiving severe injuries. Croquet Tournament. In the Southern Hawke’s Bay croquet tournament, now in progress at Dannevirke, the B grade championship was won by Mrs Ingram (Hastings), who beat Mrs Turner (Palmerston North), 26-19. In the second section of the handicap singles (final), Mrs Symonds (10) Featherston, beat Mrs Rasmussen (91), Featherston, 26-24. Fined for Failure to Enrol. "His excuse was that, as he was the father of two children and was living with a woman though not married to her, he should have been classed as a married man,” said Sergeant E. Quayle, in the Hastings Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when Eric William Booth, builder, Hastings, was charged with failing to enrol in the first division of the General Reserve. The senior-sergeant added that defendant had since married. A fine of £l5 was imposed.
