BY AMERICAN TANKER. EXCHANGE OF SHOTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SAN FRANCISCO, March 2. The navy revealed that the United States tanker William H. Berg exchanged shots with an enemy vessel, presumably a submarine, on the night of February 28, south-east of the Farailon Islands, which are 60 miles from San Francisco. Navy ships and bombers were rushed to the scene, but were unable to locate the submarine. San Francisco’s radio stations were silenced for 40 minutes during the incident.
