HEAVILY DEFEATED
JAPANESE LANDING FORCE IN CHEKIANG DRIVEN BACK TO SHIPS. FIERCE CHINESE ONSLAUGHT. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) CHUNGKING, March 2. A Chinese communique announced that a Japanese force was repulsed after it had made a landing near Siangshan, in Chekiang Province. The landing was made from 10 small steamers convoyed by three warships. After encountering fierce resistance, the Japanese retreated by steamer. Observers believed that the Japanese were searching for possible secret air bases. [ln Chekiang Province, south of Shanghai, is the nearest point to Japan (about 800 miles) occupied by Chinese forces.)
