SPECTACULAR ACCIDENT

ON NEW PLYMOUTH COURSE. TWO JOCKEYS INJURED. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) ' NEW PLYMOUTH. March 1. i Two of the Dominion’s leading jockeys, W. J. Broughton, Palmerston North, and N. Vaughan, Trentham, were admitted to the New Plymouth Hospital as the result of a spectacular smash in the last race at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Cup meeting on Saturday. Neither will be able to ride for some weeks, Broughton having received a damaged shoulder and wrist, while Vaughan was badly shaken and bruised, broke a collarbone and injured several toes. The race in which the smash oc-

curred was the Timaru Hack Handicap, six furlongs. Nearing the post when Nuna, Amoroso, Plato Boy and Greenock were fighting out a close finish, Martarawa, ridden by Vaughan, came through with a late run from the back. Finding his way blocked on the’ outside, Vaughan altered course for an opening on the inside between Nuna and Ameroso, and his mount came down. First Girl, the favourite, ridden by Broughton, who had been prominent in the running to the straight, but had tired and was well beaten, was following Nuna on the rails and had no chance of escaping the prostrate Martarawa, and fell over her. Then Captain Gale, ridden by the Levin apprentice, W. Reid, came down over First Girl. ”
