ASTONISHING ESCAPE

AIRMEN FALL 1,000 FEET. AND RECOVER FROM INJURIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) LONDON. February 27. R.A.F. doctors are still puzzling how two members of the R.A.F. are alive after falling 1000 feet from a plane without parachutes. Flight Sergeant Harry Gill, aged 25,, landed in a flax field and regained consciousness after two hours with a fractured pelvis, broken jaw and bruises. Gill said he lost consciousness while falling. Doctors presume his muscles were therefore relaxed and also presume that, as his pelvis was broken but his arms and legs were uninjured, he probably landed in a sitting position. The other fortunate man was Sergeant Observei' William Smith, Vancouver, who was flung out of a plane. He had his skull fractured, one eye knocked out of its socket, and both legs broken, in 12 places. The bones of Smith’s legs have been bolted together, so that he can walk, run, and even play football. Gill and Smith have both fully recovered and have rejoined their units.
