THE PANSY

METHOD OF PROPAGATION. The only way to ensure propagation of pansies that are true to type is to take cuttings. The first thing to do is to go over the plants and cut back all straggling growths, at the same time removing all flowers. This will rapidly encourage the formation of strong young shoots from the base, which make the ideal type of cuttings. Those about the thickness of a slate pencil, providing they show no trace of hollowness in the stems, are ideal, and should be taken about two or three inches in length. Trim off the lower J leaves and cut below a joint with a sharp knife. In the meantime, prepare the cutting bed in a frame with sandy soil made firm. Insert the cuttings and give a good soaking of water.
