CARTERTON
ENJOYABLE PARTY SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED. (“Times-Age” Special.) A party of Carterton ladies and Mr Rex Porter paid a visit to the Y.M.C.A. premises last evening and gave a most enjoyable concert at which a large number of soldiers were present. The Women’s Division’s concert party was also present and gave a very amusing sketch. All the items were encored. The following was the programme:— Mandolin solo, Mrs H. E. Ordish; song and tap dance, Misses M. Lawrence and A. Sorensen; song, Mrs L. Johnson; “Professor Gagets,” Mr Rex Porter; tap dance, Mrs J. Bridge; recitation, Mrs K. Hodder. A community sing, with Miss V. Irwin at the piano, was much enjoyed. Building Society. At a meeting of the Terminating Building Society, over which Mr. L. H. Smart presided, no tenders were received for a loan of £6OO. A ballot was then taken for two lots of £3OO each, the winners being Miss M. G. Hitchman (Martinborough) and Mr W. Vaughan (Carterton). Church Service. A Church of England service will be held at Ahiaruhe on Sunday next at 2 o’clock. Garden Party. Under the auspices of St. Andrew’s Church, Carterton, a garden party will be held at Mrs W. Martin’s residence, Rexwood Street on Friday, March 6, at 2 p.m. A similar gathering which was held last year proved most enjoyable. Personal Items. In the list of wardens for lighting restrictions, the names of Messrs E. K.
Wilkins (chief) and K. Hodder were omitted. They will control from Clifton Avenue to Brooklyn Road. Mrs Salisbury, Broadway, Carterton, has received word that her sister, Mrs Harrison, of Wellington, died in Wellington on Thursday. She is an aunt of Mrs Ted Tozer, of Carterton. Patriotic Committee. A meeting of the Carterton Patriotic Committee was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided. There were also present: Messrs W. Martin, J. Steel, L. H. Smart, C. A. Chennells, A. G .Rabbitts, A. E. Hall, J. A. B. Lawrence, Mesdames Beaven, Loftus, Beere, Pinfold, Ordish, and Miss C. Berrill. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Court, Murray, G. Brown, A. Callister, L. J. and Mrs Fairbrother. It was decided that a circular letter be sent to every householder in Carterton and district, introducing the new patriotic appeal. It was resolved that each district committee be requested to • canvass its particular locality. The Gladstone and other committees are to be asked to submit an estimate of the petrol required for travelling purposes in connection with the canvassing of their districts. It was stated that the quota of the Carterton Borough and Wairarapa South County Council to the fund was £3027. REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT'S PROGRAMME. Marlene Dietrich, Bruce Cabot and Roland Young head the cast in the great comedy-drama, “The Flame of New Orleans.” (Recommended by the Censor for Adults).
