Mr and Mrs S. W. Smith, of The Terrace, Lansdowne, have returned from a visit to Seatoun.
Mr and Mrs W. E. Vowell, of Essex Street, Masterton, have returned from a holiday spent at Paekakariki, Mr and Mrs Brewerton, of Malaya, who arrived from Singapore last week, are staying with Mr and Mrs Virtue. Herbert Street, Masterton. Mr H. L. Esau, of Masterton, has been elected a member’ of the executive of the Royal Institute of Horticulture of New Zealand. Mr Walter Green, Wellington, one of the foundation members of the New Zealand Society of Accountants, has been elected a life member of that body. Mr Hope B. Gibbons, Wellington, was elected president of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture at the annual meeting and conference of the institute in Wellington yesterday. The following Wairarapa soldiers recently returned from the Middle East: --Gunner C. C. McKenzie (Masterton), Private E. Henderson (Masterton), Private C. J. Nielsen (Mauriceville West), and Sapper E. H. Feist (Martinborough). The funeral of the late Mrs Mary Thomson took place yesterday, there being a fair attendance of mourners. Many beautiful wreaths were in evidence. The Rev. David McNeur conducted the service at Knox Church and also that at the Clareville Cemetery. The pall-bearers were: Messrs F. Tufty, E. B. Booth, G. Wilson and J. F., G. S., and P. Cooper. Mr Winston H. Turner, who was for a time resident in Masterton, has been appointed the special representative of the Australian Associated Press in the Dutch East Indies, with headquarters, for the preesnt, in Batavia. Mr Turner, who was released for this assignment by the “Sydney Sun,” was previously with the Australian Associated Press both in London and New York. The Minister of Defence (Mr Jones) last night announced that Brigadier O. H. Mead has relinquished the appointment of Officer Commanding. Southern Military District, and has been promoted to the temporary rank of MajorGeneral. He will relieve Major-Gen-eral W. H. Cunningham in command of the land forces in Fiji. General Cunningham, who has had a long period of service in Fiji, returns to New Zealand on leave.
