NOT AVAILABLE
AIR MAIL SERVICE TO THE MIDDLE EAST. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A reminder that the Empire air service was no longer available for correspondence addressed to destinations beyond the Netherlands East Indies was given last evening by the Post-master-General, Mr Webb. He said that judging by the number of letters for the armed forces in the Middle East that were still being posted at the 9d rate, it was evident that many people were not yet aware of the position. “At present only two rates are appropriate for correspondence for the armed forces in the Middle East.” said Mr Webb. “The public can post for trans-Tasman air transit and sea dispatch beyond Australia at a charge of 5d for each half ounce, or they can post for surface dispatch throughout at the usual rate (for armed forces correspondence) of 2d for the first cunce and Id for each additional half ounce.” The Minister expressed the opinion that pending the restoration of the air service to the Middle East, surface dispatch throughout would probably be just as advantageous as part air and part surface transit.
