STOCK MARKET

EWE FAIR PRICES AT PAHIATUA. A GENERAL DROP. The Associated Auctioneers report on the Pahiatua ewe fair as follows: —■ A full yarding of breeding ewes were offered to a moderate attendance of outside and local buyers. The 4 and 5-year ewes offered penned up particularly well and great credit is due to the various vendors for placing before the public such genuine lines of breeding ewes, in good condition and showing quality in breeding. Prices generally showed a drop of 3s throughout on the main ewe fair, nevertheless passings were few and practically a total clearance under the hammer was effected. The two-tooth ewes yarded were not to be compared with those offered at the first ewe fair, but even taking quality into consideration realisations showed a considerable decline. Late shorn ewes in all ages were neglected. Quotations: — Top 5-yr. ewes, 17s, 16s 9d, 16s 6d to 15s 9d; medium sorts, 15s, 14s 6d, 14s to 13s; 4-yr. ewes (top sheep), 20s 3d, 19s Gd, 19s, 18s 9d to 18s; 4 and 5-yr. ewes (top ewes), 19s, 17s, 16s 9d to 16s fid; 4 and 6-th. ewes (top sheep), 24s 3d, 22s 3d to 21s; others, 20s to 18s to 17s 3d; 5-yr. ewes (low mouths), 13s, 12s 9d, 12s to 9s 9d; 2-th. ewes (top sheep), 25s 9d, 24s 9d, 24s to 23s lOd; medium sorts, 22s to 20s; small, to 18s. EWE FAIR HELD IN MASTERTON YESTERDAY, SHARP DECLINE IN PRICES. The Associated Auctioneers report having held their second ewe fair of the season yesterday, when 25,000 breeding ewes were offered. Although there was a very fair attendance of local farmers, it was very noticeable that very few buyers were present from outside districts. As expected there was a sharp decline in prices as compared with last year, but yesterday’s values were well up to those ruling at the various fairs held this season. Practically all the top lines met with good competition up to certain limits. Most of the 2-th. ewes were on the small size, but the older sheep were in good order and made an attractive yarding. The “Patakawa” 2-ths. made 28s, which was top price on the 2-th. section for a line of any size. Mr R. E. Graham offered a small pen of 40 very nice 2-th. ewes which made 30s. The “Eparaima” maiden 4-ths. topped the market at 24s 9d in their section. Only a very limited number of 4-yr. ewes came forward and Mr N. G. Groves made best money at 18s. Mr M. D. McGregor’s 5-yr. ewes again topped the fair for the older ewes, making 18s 3d under strong competition. Other main lines sold as under: —2-th. section: A/c G. and J. Moore, 25s to 26s Id; a/c Wm.
