CARGO SHIPS

MIGHTY FLEET BEING BUILT IN CANADA. FIRST LAUNCHED RECENTLY. MONTREAL, Quebec. The first of a mighty fleet of cargo ships slid down the ways into the bt Lawrence River recently, when Mis Howe, wife of the Hon C. D. Howe, snapped the ribbon that started the Fort Ville-Marie on her way. The Fort Ville-Marie, so named for the long-disappeared fort on which Montreal now stands, is one of the standardised North Sands type of caigo vessel. Although generally described as 9,300-ton vessels, their deadweight capacity in actual service is 10,000 tons. They are of simple type, coal burning, powered with Scotch marine boilers and triple expansion reciprocating steam engines. The Fort VilleMarie will have a speed of between 10 and 11 knots. Her length is 427 feet, beam 57 feet 2 inches, and draft 25 feet 6 inches. First of a long line that will go far toward keeping Britain’s vital Atlantic supply line open, the Fort VilleMarie was followed next by Fort Vancouver launched 3,000-odd miles away from the Fort Ville-Marie. Keels have been laid for 24 of these ships. Orders have been placed in Canadian shipyards for a total of 150 freighters. All but ten of them are the same 10,000tonners. The remainder are 5,000-ton ships. i , When these Fort ships take to sea. they will be manned by a crew of 40 —exclusive of gunners.
