INFLICTED ON THE GERMANS SOUTH OF LENINGRAD
Sixteenth Army Enveloped and Routed FURTHER RUSSIAN CAPTURES ON MANY PARTS OF FRONT OFFENSIVE ACTION RESUMED IN CRIMEA LONDON, February 25. Following' on the rout of the German 16th Army by the Russians at Staraya Russa, south of Lake Ilmen, there is news of the capture by the Soviet forces in the Leningrad area of a position regarded as vital for the spring' offensive. The German radio mentions for the first time a battle north-west of Lake Ilmen in which it is claimed that violent Russian attacks extending over six weeks have been hurled, back with heavy losses. The capture by the Russians of ten more places in the Rzhev area is reported. It is revealed that before the rout of the German Army south of Lake Ilmen Hitler had given orders that the positions must be held. The Russians are pushing on beyond Dorogobuj in the direction of Smolensk. Heavy fighting’ is reported in the Viazma-Rzhev area. Fighting has again flared up in the Crimea, where the Russians are attacking the German positions near the Sea of Azov.
