POLITICAL ADVANCE
MADE BY THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT INCREASE IN ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES. SPOKESMAN ON WAR OUTLOOK. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) CHUNGKING. February 24. The Chinese Government today announced that the number of elected representatives on the People’s Political Council would be increased. This is regarded as a first step toward establishing a fully democratic Government for China. The spokesman said: “We are very hopeful that India will achieve a freedom that would be a contribution to the freedom of the whole world.” The Government spokesman also announced that General Chiang Kai-shek has returned from India by air, foreshadowing the establishment of regular air transport. The official reiterated that China is self-sufficient in food, has enough clothing, can manufacture light arms, and has a quantity of heavy equipment waiting to be shiped to the front. Essential but unbulky war materials, including medicines, are required via India. The spokesman gave little hope of the hard-pressed British in Lower Burma being reinforced by the Chinese who are pouring into Burma, because none, he said, have reached the southern front as yet.
