WOMEN’S AUXILIARY « COMMITTEE MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the fortnightly committee meeting of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary held in the Borough Council Chambers there were present Mes--1 dames H. E. Ordish (in the chair), A. F. Pink, W. H. Hall and F. L. Barr. An apology for absence was received from Miss O. W. Wolters. Mr B. Roberts, chairman of the 1 vegetable committee, outlined plans ■ for encouraging the growing of potato ■ and other vegetables. He stated that it ■ was intended to make a Dominion- , wide appeal to those who had land or • vacant sections which they are willing ' to offer to the vegetable committee. The president announced that one girl who had joined the Land Corps had been placed on a sheep farm in the Masterton district. Swimming Baths. 1 ■ Soldiers who have used the local baths have complimented the caretaker, Mr J. McKenzie, on the appointments. Beside a large number of soldiers about 1700 children have had the use of the baths. The caretaker has had a very strenuous time for some weeks past. Wolf Cub Pack. The Carterton Wolf Cub Pack, some fifteen in number, paraded under Cubmasters F. I. Eagle and H. Herdman to St. Mark's Church on Sunday. The Rev. W. F. Stent preached an impressive sermon to the pack, the text of which was “Beware of Evil Doing.” Soldiers Entertained. On Saturday evening a concert party arranged an entertainment for soldiers at the Y.M.C.A. Hostel, and the programme, which was greatly enjoyed, was as follows: —Recitations (humorous), Miss Norma' Tinsley and Mrs Ken Hodder; mandolin solo, Mrs H. E. Ordish (accompanied 'by Miss Verna Irwin on the piano); conjuring tricks by Mr H. T. Ray. A community sing, for which Miss Irwin played the accompaniments, brought a pleasant gathering to a close. Ban on Dogs. At a special meeting last night the Carterton Borough Council passed a by-law dealing with the registration and control of dogs in a certain area. The area defined was between Mabel Street in the north and Victoria and Wakelin streets in the south. The by-law will come into force on March 31 and will be strictly enforced. When in operation no dogs will be allowed in the area defined unless on a leash. Dog owners disobeying the law will be liable to a fine of £2 for every offence. Dogs which are not claimed will be collected and destroyed. REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. “Major Barbara,” Bernard Shaw’s great picture, will be shown tonight. It is the most brilliant offering of the past year, with Wendy Hiller in the leading role. There will be a special matinee of “Major Barbara” on Thursday afternoon. (Recommended by the Censor’ for Adults).
