MOTHER PROPOSED
BRIDE FOR SOLDIER SON. RING PLACED ON FINGER. An Army canteen worker, Maisie Fowler, of Grimsby, aged 19, wears a diamond engagement ring, states a London exchange. Her future mother-in-law put it on the girl’s finger after proposing on behalf of her son. Before Private Robert Mason, a bus driver, went to France with the British Expeditionary Force, he told Maisie he would buy her an engagement ring the first time he came home on leave if she would accept him. After the evacuation of Dunkirk Mason was reported missing. Nothing was heard of him until a few days ago, when his mother received a letter from him saying he was a prisoner of war in Germany. “Please buy an engagement ring for me,” he added, “and if Maisie is willing, put it on her finger.” So Mrs Mason bought the ring and popped the question. Now two letters are on their way to Germany telling Robert all about that ring, and two womeh are planning a wedding that will take place when the'man who was engaged by proxy comes home again. ‘
