ATTACK FROM SEA

BY ENEMY SUBMARINE ON CALIFORNIAN COAST. NEGLIGIBLE DAMAGE DONE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, February 24. An enemy submarine, presumably Japanese, shelled the coastal area eight miles northward of Santa Barbara, California, tonight. This is the first hostile attack against the mainland of the United States. The submarine fired between one and two dozen shells. There were no casualties and damage is negligible. Another message states that the enemy objective was the Ellwood oil refinery.
