Private Bruce McNab, of Masterton, is spending a few days’ leave at Opiki, Manawatu.
Mrs Cecil van Praagh, who has been visiting her daughter, Mrs C. Murfitt, New Plymouth, has returned to Masterton.
The engagement is announced of Violet, second daughter of Mr and Mrs Voss, Tinui, to Jack William, third son of Mrs M. E. Robinson, Napier. Mr S. Lewis, a Cambridge barrister, has been appointed deputy-chairman of the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board, to act in the absence of Mr Paterson, S.M.
Mr W. V. Dyer was appointed chairman of the Wellington Colleges Board at yesterday’s meeting, Mr L. McKenzie having relinquished the position through ill-health. The engagement is announced of Thelma Helen, youngest daughter of Mrs and the late Mr J. Liddington, and Thomas William Madsen, son of Mrs E. Hall, Masterton.
The engagement is announced of Joan, only daughter of Mr and Mrs A. J, Snelgrove, Masterton, to John (Middle East Forces), only son of Mr and Mrs J. D. Allan, Lansdowne. Mrs A. S. Stewart, commandant of the Wairarapa centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, is attending the Voluntary Aid Council’s meeting in Wellington today.
The engagement is announced between Mary Pauline .third daughter of Mr and Mrs A. S. Clulow, Kaitawa, and Eric William, youngest son of Mr and Mrs F. V. Bryant, Mangatainoka. On Monday evening the Palmerston North City Council expressed sympathy with Mrs S. Stidolph in the death of her husband,, who had been a valued member of the city power-house staff for 13 years. Mrs J. E. Willett, Featherston, and Mrs A. W. Horton, Greytown, will represent the Wairarapa Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society at the Dominion Council meeting at Wellington tomorrow.
The Very Rev. Father James Long, administrator of St. Patrick’s parish, Greymouth, has been appoint,cd to the office of vicar-general to the Rt. Rev. Dr. M. J. Brodie, Bishop of Christchurch. Father Long, who has been in Greymouth for the last 20 years, will remain in Greymouth, except on occasions when, in the absence of the bishop, his presence in Christchurch may be required. The office of vicargeneral in the diocese of Christchurch had been vacant for some time. The funeral of the late Mrs Elizabeth Lloyd took place in Masterton yesterday, there being a representative attendance of mourners. Among a number of beautiful wreaths was one from, the Masterton West Free Kindergarten. The Rev. I. Edwards conducted the service at the Chapel of Hyde's Funeral Service Ltd., and also that at the cemetery. The pall-bearers were: Messrs F. A. Clarke, G. B. Willis, L. Dunn, R. Warrington, Lieut. R. Nicols and Corporal J. G. Hanaghan.
Advice has been received of the death in a motor accident in Equatorial Sudan on February 3 of Dr. John G. Myers, only son of Mrs F. Myers and the late Mr F. Myers, Wanganui, and a brother of Mrs E. B. Wellwood, Wairarapa. Dr. Myers was educated at Wanganui Technical College, and served in the Great War. He graduated M.Sc., and was awarded an 1851 Exhibition Scholarship at Victoria University College, later obtaining his Doctorate at Harvard University. As an entomologist in the West Indies he was successful in combating a borer attacking sugar crops. For the last four years he had been in the Southern Sudan as ecological adviser to the Sudan Government. He was the author of numerous scientific publications. Dr. Myers is survived by his wife and two daughters in British Guiana.
