CARTERTON
RETURNED SOLDIERS ENJOYABLE RE-UNION. (“Times-Age” Special.) Last evening in the Masonic Hall, Carterton, members of the Carterton branch of the Returned Services Association held a very enjoyable reunion. The president, Mr A. T. Murray, presided. Among those present were Briagdier-General Parkinson and Aircraftman Gibb Johnston, secretary of the local R.S.A. for many years. The president extended a warm welcome to the Brigadier-General, who had seen service in Crete, Greece and Libya, and to his officers. The following musical programme was rendered: Song, Mr Ardrey; card and other tricks, Mr H. T. Ray, song, Sgt. Treseder; pianoforte solo, Sergt. Fernie; song. Mr A. Kay, who accompanied himself on his guitar; song. Mr A. Goulden; pianoforte duet, Lieut. Maiden and Sergt. Fernie; recitation, Mr Chatwin; community singing led by Mr A. Kay. Sergt. Fernie played the accompaniments. Mr A. G. Rabbits stated that the Carterton branch of the Returned Services Association had a membership of 135, the fifth largest in New Zealand. Brigadier-General Parkinson thanked the chairman and members of the Carterton R.S.A. for their hospitality. Supper was provided and several toasts were honoured.
DRUIDS’ LODGE
QUARTERLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of Totara Lodge No. 3 U.A.O.D. was held last night. The clearance of one member to Pacific Lodge, Wellington, was granted. Vice Arch. Druid Bro. Geff. Bain, who is entering a Territorial Camp, was granted two months leave of absence. The election of Arch. Druid to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Bro. H. Murrell resulted in Bro. H. Matson being elected. There were three nominations. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £44 9s 5d were passed for payment. Vandals at Work. During last week postal boxes attached to local houses were removed by irresponsible persons. In some instances the boxes had been torn away and damaged and in others thrown into nearby creeks. The matter has been placed in the hands of the police. Entertainment Committee. Mr H. Mortenson presided over - a meeting of the citizens and Y.M.C.A. Committee held in the Council Chambers last evening. There were also present: Mesdames H. E. Ordish, H. Hodder, M. Woods, P. Beere, W. Pinfold, Misses C. Berrill and O. W. Wolters, Messrs L. S. Gallon, H. E. Ordish and Briggs and Nees (Y.M.C.A.). Apologies for absence were received from the Rev. J. A. Daglish and A. G. Rabbitts. It was resolved that a dance be held in the King’s Theatre on Saturday night and that the admission be Is 6d, men in uniform Is. Dancing will commence a.t 7.30 o’clock and terminate at 11.30 o’clock. The dance on this occasion will be thrown open to the public, after which an invitation list will be prepared and circulated. Several donations were made and gratefully acknowledged. Door-keepers were appointed as follows:—Messrs E. McKenzie, H. J. McKenzie, Rex Porter and M. Woods. Members of the ladies’ committee will meet at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon to finalise the supper arrangements. Six ladies of the committee with the assistance of one voluntary aid offered to take charge of the supper room. Messrs Keith Reid and P. Beere were appointed M’s.C. Black-out Inspection. 1 The wardens of various streets in Carterton last evening made an inspection of residences in connection with the black-out. A Contrast in Weather. A letter received in Carterton yesterday from a resident of Horsham Downs, Hamilton, referred to the very hot weather which was being experienced there in marked contrast to that in the Wairarapa. The grass had dried up and the supply of milk at the factories has decreased considerably. REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. “Major Barbara,” Bernard Shaw’s great picture, will be shown tonight. It is the most brilliant offering of the past year, with Wendy Hiller in the leading role. A special matinee of “Major Barbara” will be given on Thursday afternoon. (Recommended by the Censor for Adults).
