GREAT ATTACK
OPENED BY THE RED ARMY On First Day of Its 25th Year SIGNS OF BIG EFFORT ON CENTRAL FRONT GALLANT WORK OF THE SOVIET FLEET LONDON, February 23. At dawn today a big’ Russian attack began on the central front. Moscow states that scores of guns opened fire on strong German positions. The barrage moved forward and infantry began to advance supported by tanks. The soldiers had just heard Stalin’s order of the day and were filled with great enthusiasm. Thus the first day of the 25th year of the Red Army has begun well. Moscow also reported that large reserves of troops are now moving up to the front. Tributes to the achievements of the Red Army have been followed by news of the great work of the Red Fleet. The ships defending Leningrad have destroyed 1,000 enemy fortified points and overwhelmed 500 enemy batteries. A thousand officers and men of the fleet have been awarded the decoration of Hero of the Soviet Union and nearly 40,000 have received other honours.
