ATTACK ON TIMOR
TOKIO CLAIMS RAPID PROGRESS. ENEMY CONVOY LOCATED BY AIRCRAFT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, February 22. The Tokio radio claimed that Japanese forces are proceeding to occupy the whole of Timor Island. Australian troops tried to restrain the advance, but were repulsed, the enemy radio stated. Canberra reports that Australian aircraft yesterday located an enemy convoy near Koepang, Dutch Timor. ENEMY CONVOY SIGHTED OFF COAST OF BURMA. LONDON, February 21. Newspaper dispatches from Kunming, south China, report that a large number of Japanese warships and transports were sighted off the Burma coast. The enemy fleet was approaching the flat, sandy, undefended part of the coast. Chungking reports that Chinese and Allied troops repulsed a Japanese attack near Mongyin, in north-east Burma. The Japanese attempted to cross a river west of Chiengsen but were thrown back. The Rangoon radio stated that the Allied air forces throughout today strongly took the offensive against the Japanese positions, continually strafing Japanese infantry and causing heavy casualties, also started many fires. Allied planes without loss shot down three fighters and damaged'-oth-ers.
