DRASTIC STEPS
ECONOMIC AND INDUSTRIAL LIFE ■ — NON-ESSENTIAL INDUSTRIES ELIMINATED. ACTION IN AUSTRALIA. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) CANBERRA, February 19. Decisions which will bring about drastic changes in the economic and industrial life of Australia were made by the War Cabinet today. The De-puty-Prime Minister. Mr Forde, said in Sydney that these decisions, and also others affecting the defences of Australia, cannot be announced at present, for security reasons. “A number of factories in Victoria end South Australia are to be closed shortly as the first step in the Federal Government’s policy of eliminating non-essential, industries and diverting their employees to war work. An announcement to this effect was made tonight by the Minister of War Organisation of Industry, Mr Dedman. He said that the decree would operate from February 28. Those affected would include manufacturers of art metal ceilings, architectural ornaments, advertising showcards, bathheaters, billiard tables, carpet sweepers. cement ornaments, children's tricycles and scooters, confectionery and cordial machines, deck chairs, electric washing machines, fancy earthenware, leather cases, fur coats an similar garments, men’s evening dress wear, racecourse equipment, musical instruments, skates, jewellery, paper novelties, walking sticks, and all types of machinery for the manufacture of the foregoing articles. Senator Ashley, Postmaster-General, announced that commercial radio telephone services between Australia, the United States, and the Netherlands East Indies are to be withdrawn from normal use. Suspension was essential, he added, in the interests of security.
