GIANT TANKER
19.000-TON SHIP TORPEDOED AND SUNK. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) NEW YORK, February 18. The Navy Department announced that the tanker Ehblum has been torpedoed and sunk off the Atlantic coast. The Ehblum was of 19,400 tons, the largest all-welded tanker ever built, and it cost 4,000,000 dollars. Representative Bates in Washington today requested Mr Vinson, the chairman of the Naval Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, to summon the Naval Secretary, Colonel Knox, before the committee to explain what steps the Navy has taken to protect New England and the rest of the east coasts from attack or sabotage. Mr Bates said that persons residing in the coastal areas, specially large communities, were disturbed over the warnings by high Government officials that such attacks were possible.
