The Hon. R. Semple, Minister of National Service, returned to Wellington yesterday from the South Island.

■ Mr and Mrs G. Milne, Masterton, have received official information that their son, L./Cpl. G. F. Milne ,is reported to be a prisoner of war. The Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, Minister of Health, left Wellington for Auckland by the Limited express last evening. He will return to Wellington on Monday. Mr G. H. B. Lili, of Willoughby, South Canterbury, was elected vice-president of the Methodist Church of New Zealand at the opening session of the annual conference in Wellington last night. Mr Lili is well known in public life in South Canterbury, and has been associated with the Methodist Church all his lifetime. The Hon. H. G. R. Mason, AttorneyGeneral, will leave Wellington tomorrow for Invercargill, where he is to open a new courthouse on Tuesday. He will be absent from Wellington for the rest of the week.

At the annual conference of the Methodist Church of New Zealand in Wellington last night, the voting for the president-elect for 1943 resulted in the election of the Rev. C. A. Olds, the Rev. R. B. Tinsley being runner-up. Mr Olds is stationed in Hastings, and is the chairman of the Hawke’s Bay-Mana-watu district. The Rev. W. G. Slade was elected as secretary for 1943. The death occurred at Feilding of Mr Charles Parsons Guthrie, at the age of 72 years. Born in Acton, England, the late Mr Guthrie travelled to New Zealand with his parents, the late Mr and Mrs Alex Guthrie, in the sailing ship Euterpe to settle in the new township of Feilding. He was engaged for some years in pioneering work as a contractor and later in life joined the Sash and Door Co. He married a Miss Bowler, the daughter of another pioneering family, who survives him, together with five members of his family, namely, Mesdames C. Stevens and W. Page (Feilding) and Messrs Percy and Bert Guthrie (Auckland) and Mr Richard Guthrie, of Feilding. There are also four brothers, Messrs H. E. (Feilding), Fred (Palmerston North), Alec (Wanganui) and Albert (Masterton).
