HATCHERY WORK
PROPOSED CLOSING DOWN. DEFERRED BY WELLINGTON SOCIETY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Wellington Acclimatisation Society last night considered a recommendation of its fish committee that all hatchery work be closed down till after the war or till petrol again became available, both for the hatchery and for licence-holders. Mr A. J. Seed said that fishing today was so severely restricted that depletion of the fish population was not going on to the same extent as formerly. In addition, he said, there seemed to be little use in spending money to keep hatcheries open if the society could not get the petrol to liberate fry over a reasonably wide area. Members expressed reluctance to close down hatchery work and a committee was appointed to investigate costs and results of the work, ascertain whether ova could be obtained from the south if the hatchery were closed, and find out the letting value of the property.
