GREYTOWN

CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE PATRIOTIC FUND APPEAL. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Citizen’s Patriotic Committee was held in the Council Chambers committee room last evening. Mr A. W. Horton occupied the chair. The following committee was set up to deal with soldiers’ parcels: Mesdames Horton (convenor), F. Wood, A. York. T. Maddison, A. Gregor, S. Shedden, F. Dewhurst and A. Johnson. Mr Nees, of the Field Staff of the Y.M.C.A., spoke on canteen work. Mr Horton stated that 24 gallons of benzine would be available once a month for transport purposes. Y.M.C.A. lady helpers would be required to find their own transport. Mr J. Colemand is to be controller of benzine. , A grant of £2 was made to the soldiers' club room for February. The new patriotic fund appeal was discussed. Greytown and one third of the county are asked to raise £1560. It was decided to make a house-to-house appeal and several lady members undertook to help in the canvas. Mrs Anker offered to cover the Ahikouka district. The chairman was asked to confer with Mr L. J. Thompson, councillor for

the Morison's Bush district. Red Cross Society. Last evening Dr. Palmer delivered a lecture on tuberculosis to a well attended meeting of Red Cross Society members. League of Mothers. It is customary for the Greytown League of Mothers’ members to attend a church service in a body once a year. This year members will attend St. Luke's Anglican Church on Sunday evening. Personal. Mr and Mrs P. Brittain, Wellington, are the guests of Mr and Mrs S. Shedden, Main Street. S.M. Court. The monthly sitting of the Greytown Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday, Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presiding. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following cases: W. IH. Day, Ltd. v Charles F. Morgan, claim £2 6s 2d, with costs £1 5s 6d; C. W. Brown v R. Matenga, claim £5 18s 9d, with costs £1 19s 6d. F. A. O’Neale (Mr J. Card) proceeded against H. J. Bourke (Mr J. F. Thompson) for £lB 10s, in connection with the sinking of a well. After having heard the evidence the Magistrate gave judgment for plaintiff for £lB 10s, with costs £4 12s 6d. Harold Peterson was charged with having control of liquor near a dance hall and was fined £3 with costs 10s. TOWN HALL TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. A double feature programme will be shown tonight—“lndian Nation,” featuring Richard Dix. (Approved for Universal Exhibition), and “Man-Made Monster,” with Lon Chaney Junr. and Lionel Atwill in the leading roles. (Recommended by the Censor for Adults).
