S.M. COURT r BUSINESS AT MONTHLY SITTING. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H, P. Lawry, S.M., presided over the monthly sitting of the S.M. Court held at Carterton yesterday. The following cases were dealt with: — In a judgment summons case, W.F.C.A. Ltd. v. J. Goodin, a claim for £1 4s, the Magistrate ordered the amount to be paid forthwith, in default 2 days’ imprisonment at Carterton. D. J. McGilvary and Ross McKenzie Jackson were charged by the police ,that on January 10 they were found in possession of drink in the vicinity of a dance hall, during the progress of a dance at the King’s Theatre. The former was fined £1 with costs 10s and the latter £2 with costs 10s. Geo. H. Mouldey was charged by the police ivith having committed a breach of a prohibition order and was fined £2 with costs 10s. In a case in which D. T. King (Mr Daniell) proceeded against Annie and Percy Humphrey (Mr D. L. Taverner) for the recovery of funeral expenses totalling £25, the Magistrate reserved his decision.
ENGAGEMENT HASTE—BREE. The engagement is announced of Eileen Kathrine, twin daughter of Mr and Mrs Bree, 55 Riverside Drive, Lower Hutt, to Gunner Raymond Victor Haste. 2nd N.Z.A. Corps, second son of Mr and Mrs W. L. Haste, Carterton. BOY SCOUTS CARD TOURNAMENT. The weekly card tournament conducted by the Boy Scout Committee was held in the bandroom last evening. There was a good attendance and prizes were won as follows: —Ladies, Mesdames Brown and Lenihan; men, Messrs Malone and Patterson.
Home Guard. The weekly parade of the Carterton Home Guard was under the command of Sergeant Major Wilkinson, of the 2nd Wellington Battalion. The members acquitted themselves creditably. Personal Items. Mrs Rex Walker last evening received a message from the Government notifying her that her husband was a prisoner of war. Mrs G. Wiley, of Eroadway, has received a cable stating that Pte Norman Wiley, who was reported missing, is now believed to be a prisoner of war. Mrs W. Hawkins, of Wellington, is a visitor to Carterton. High Producing Friesians. The highest producing Friesian heifers tested under Government O.H.T. in November were Sungleam Olga Fobes (owned by Mr M. J. Parker, Dalefield), a 2-year-old with the excellent return of 68,791 b of butterfat, and Tarata W. Princess (the property of Mr L. S. Gallon, Carterton), a 3-year-old who yielded 78.791 b of butterfat. The former heifer was bred at Kopuaranga by Messrs E. C. and H. F. Cottle, the sire being Ahikouka Sungleam Lad and the dam Ahikouka Zella Fobes. Tarata W. Princess was bred by Mr Gallon and last season under C.O.R. test yielded 5181 b of butterfat. Her sire is Mahoe Wolsely and her dam Tarata Princess Fobes (Government O.H.T. 5001 b fat). REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. “Brother Orchid,” with Edward G. Robinson and Ann Sothern in the leading roles, is an unusual gangster comedy which will be screened tonight. It is recommended by the Censor for Adults. Also showing will be “Her First Beau,” featuring Jane Withers. (Approved for Universal Exhibition).
