BENCH AND BAR
SOME REMINISCENCES INTERESTING ADDRESS TODAY. AT ROTARY CLUB LUNCHEON. The weekly luncheon meeting of the Masterton Rotary Club was held at the Y.M.C.A. today. The president, Mr Norman Lee, presided over a good attendance of members. Visitors present were Mr John Farrell, Auckland Rotary Club, Lieut. L. D. Wales, and Messrs T. 0. Lambie (Wellington), R. McKenzie, and N. G. Whiteman. The speaker for the day was Mr H. F. Lawry, S.M., who gave some very interesting reminiscences of the bench and bar, dealing chiefly with episodes in the daily life of men in the mining towns of the West Coast. Mr Lawry followed this up with numerous instances of humour on the bench and from the bar. Some of his most interesting stories dealt with the old-time clerks of the court —men who had not. been trained to the clerical side but who always contrived to see that the wheels of justice were kept well oiled. On the motion of Mr H. H. Daniell the speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his interesting talk.
