OBITUARY

MR HERBERT MARSH. The death occurred in Wellington last 1 night of Mr Herbert Marsh, a wellknown and popular Masterton resident. The late Mr Marsh had been in illhealth for some months. Born in Carterton 65 years ago, he had lived practically all his life in the Wairarapa district, mostly in Masterton. He had a long assocaition with the carrying business, and for about- 25 years was employed by Messrs Fly and Young, Ltd. He was the first driver engaged by that firm when they started business 37 years ago. Latterly he was engaged on the motor delivery service of the “Times-Age.” He was a prominent member of the Odd Fellows’ Lodge. He was of a quiet disposition, and was held in great respect by his many friends. The late Mr Marsh was. in his younger days, a well-known footballer. Over forty years ago he played in the back division of the Masterton and Union Clubs, and represented Wairarapa on numerous occasions. In a match at Christchurch against Canterbury he took a mark at half-way, and from the kick E. McKenzie, of Carterton, landed a sensational goal, which won the match for Wairarapa. He also played football in Wellington for the Oriental seniors. Mr Marsh was also, connected with the Old Masterto Volunteer Fire Brigade as a runner, and was associated with the Labour movement locally. A widow and family of two sons, Messrs F. G. and H. G. Marsh (Masterton), and two daughters, Mesdames J. F. Cosgrove (Palmerston North) and W. N. Garry (Dannevirkc) survive, besides eleven grandchildren and two brothers, Messrs A ,H. Marsh (Masterton) and E. Marsh (Petone), and four sisters, Mesdames D. Dunn (Masterton), F. Crombie (Wanganui), L. Driver (Palmerston North) and Fleming (Christchurch). The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving St. Patrick’s Church at 2 p.m. for the Masterton cemetery.
