MORE CAPTURES
MADE BY RUSSIANS ON CENTRAL & KHARKOV FRONTS. ACHIEVEMENTS OF SOVIET NAVAL FORCES. LONDON, February 16. In Russia our Allies have captured more villages on the central and Kharkov fronts. German counter-attacks were defeated in the Kharkov region. The “Pravda” says that in an attempt to check the Russian advance the Germans have been throwing in reserves, but these are now retreating, with the Russians hard on their heels. Moscow reports heavy fighting in the Kerch Peninsula, in the Crimea. Moscow also gives some particulars of the achievements of the Soviet naval forces since Hitler’s invasion began. In that period 81 enemy warships and 276 auxiliary vessels have been destroyed and 49 others damaged. One Russian submarine has sunk seven enemy vessels, of a total tonnage of nearly 36,000. Russian communique says: “On February 14, Soviet Air Force units destroyed or damaged 125 lorries, with troops and equipment, three transport buses, 60 ammunition wagons and eleven guns. They also blew up one ammunition dump, set fire to twenty railway wagons, and routed and partly annihilated three infantry battalions. “During the period February 1 to 14, the Germans lost 269 planes, including 137 in aerial combat, 34 shot down b> anti-aircraft guns, and 98 destroyed on the ground. Our losses were 83.”
