The engagement is announced of Frances Eva, second daughter of Mr and Mrs F. R. Burt, Featherston, to Trooper Gordon Walter, younger son of Mr and Mrs L. E. Holmes, Petone.
The engagement is announced of Ethel Linda, second daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Koce, Alfredton Road, Eketahuna, to Mason Hector, fourth son of Mr and Mrs P. K. Ngatuere, of Hastwells.
At Wanganui the death occurred of Mr William •Jury, well known as a hotel licensee in the Wanganui, New Plymouth, Tauranga and Auckland districts. Born in Waitara in 1877, he entered the tailoring business before he took over the Egmont Hotel in Hawera.
The funeral of the late Mr B. H. Page, of Masterton, took place yesterday, the Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich conducting the service. The pallbearers were Messrs G. L. Scrivener. G. Selby and J. Barr (representing the Foresters’ Lodge) and Messrs Forrest, C. E. Grey and H. H. Hunt. The death has occurred of Mr Charles W. Hendrey, Mount Eden, Auckland, a former superintendent of police in Auckland. When he retired on superannuation early in 1926, he had completed 47 years’ service in the police force of the Dominion. Mr Hendrey was born in London 80 years ago, and came to New Zealand in 1876. He later joined the Armed Constabulary. In 1881 he transferred to the police branch.
There was a representative attendance at the funeral yesterday of the late Mr George Howard, of Masterton. The Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich officiated. Among the many wreaths was one from the officers and members of Stonehenge Lodge of Druids. Mr W. R. Pawson read the Druids’ burial service. The pallbearers were Messrs F. Pickering, H. Smith. W. R. Pawson, H. Anstice, W. P. Andrews and C. J. Wrigley.
