PERSONAL

His Excellency the Governor-General, attended by Captain H. G. Helmore, inspected certain units of the 7th Brigade in the Wairarapa district yesterday. Mrs W. A. Russell, 79 Renall Street, Masterton, has received cable 'advice that her sons, Pilot Officer Cecil Russell and Sgt. Guy Russell, who are attached to the R.A.F. are safe and well in England.

Private Robert A. Buick, farmer, of Greytown, and formerly of Masterton, who was preyiously reported missing on active service, is now a prisoner of war. His wife, Mrs Florence Iveson Buick, resides in Humphries Street, Greytown.

The late Mrs M. E. Grant, who died recently at Otaki, was a formei wellknown resident of the Wairarapa. She was 75 years of age, and leaves a husband (Mr Joseph Grant, formerly of Gladstone and Te Ore Ore) and a family of four grown-up children. She was very favourably known in the Wairarapa for her work as a nurse among both Europeans and Maoris, and rendered valued service in the interests of the Anglican and Presbyterian churches. Lieutenant R. Francis, bandmaster of the Wanganui Garrison Band for the past seven years, has been appointed bandmaster of a military camp band. Under Lieutenant Francis, the Wanganui Garrison Band won the A grade championship of the Dominion at Nelson in 1937. At Palmerston North the band won the hymn and marching test the next year, secured second honours in 1939 at Christchurch, and won the second test at Wellington the following year. Lieutenant Francis received his early musical training in the Salvation Army Band at Wanganui, of which combination he was later bandmaster.
