GERMAN WARSHIPS BOMBED
ATTACKED H STRAITS OF DOVER Operations by British Aircraft and Destroyers > EIGHTEEN ENEMY PLANES SHOT DOWN OUR LOSSES TOTAL 36 MACHINES LONDON, February 12. The German battle-cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the cruiser Prinz Eugen, with heavy sea and air support, have been attacked near the Straits of Dover by destroyers, the Fleet Air Arm and aircraft of the R.A.F. The Dover defences also opened fire at extreme range. A later message states that the warships had a heavy escort of fighter aircraft, 15 of which were shot down by our fighters and at least three by our bombers. The ships were repeatedly attacked. Our pilots are confident that each of the main enemy warships was hit by bombs. We lost 20 bombers and 16 fighters. The three German warships mentioned had been sheltering for some months at Brest, where they had been repeatedly subjected to British air attacks.
