The apparent destruction of a submarine by depth charges somewhere in the Pacific, after it had crashdived to escape ramming by a United States destroyer, was reported by the navy public relations officer in San Francisco. The incident occurred while destroyers were escorting a convoy of 22 transports and merchantmen, all of which reached port safely after a voyage of over a week.
