It was a challenge cricket match between the A.I.F. and R.A.A.F. The former were batting, and Private Blotts was umpire. In one over the fast bowler for the Air Force appealed three times for an obvious l.b.w. decision against the sergeant-major. Three limes Blotts disallowed the appeal. With the fourth delivery the bowler again appealed. “Howzat, ump?” “Not out!” “Listen, ump,” grumbled the disgusted bowler, “why don’t you give him out?” “Cripes, mate, I can’t do that,” replied Blotts. “We have only nine gallons in the pavilion, and the sergeant-major is the best bloomin' drinker in the army,”
