SERIOUS PROBLEM

» FOR WHOLE WESTERN HEMISPHERE AXIS AGENTS IN SOUTH AMERICA. SHELTERING IN ONE OR TWO REPUBLICS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.20 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February 6. The Assistant-Secretary of State (Mr Sumner Welles) stated that the concentration of Axis agents in South American nations which had not broken off diplomatic relations with the Axis created a serious problem to the entire Western Hemisphere. The Argentine and Chile were the only nations still retaining ties with the Axis and Chile was expected soon to break off relations. A Rio de Janiero message states that the Government has authorised the illfamed Nazi Condor Air Line to resume operations, accepting the company’s assurance that the Condor is now completely Brazilian. The United States Embassy in Rio de Janiero declares that the Condor line is still under the direction of the Nazis.
