BATTLE FOR SMOLENSK
APPROACHING DECISIVE STAGE Fighting of Ever-mounting Ferocity BOTH SIDES HURLING IN FURTHER RESERVES RED ARMY GIVING ENEMY NO RESPITE F LONDON, February 6. The battle for Smolensk appears to be approaching a decisive stage. Both sides are hurlng more and more reserves into fighting of ever-mounting ferocity. A Soviet radio announcer reports further Russian successes on this front. The Germans are putting up a fierce resistance. The enemy is desperately striving to safeguard men from destruction, but the aim of the Red Army is to give the enemy no respite and to destroy his manpower and equipment.

Today’s Moscow communique speaks of continuous pressure against the enemy everywhere. The supplement to the communique gives details of numerous local successes on all fronts without specifying the precise places. The Leningrad radio reports fierce fighting at several places with consid-
erable losses to the enemy. On the Central Front American planes are now playing an important part in the defence of Moscow. Reports from the city state that United States airmen shot down seven enemy planes. A Vichy report states that the Red Army on the central front is maintaining heavy pressure toward Yelnia and Roslavel. On the southern sector, Marshal Timoshenko’s troops have captured a town 60 miles north-west of Mariupol. This marks a notable advance toward the Sea of Azov. The Moscow radio stated that the Russians on the south-west front in the past 24 hours have dealt the Germans blow .after blow and continued to advance. The Russian air force is actively participating and maintains mastery of the air.
