WAFD LEADER
FORMING CABINET IN EGYPT ON OWN TERMS TREATY WITH BRITAIN ‘ , TO BE UPHELD. DISCONTENT OVER FOOD LONDON, February 5. It, is reported* from Cairo that the Wafd leader, Nahas Pasha, is forming a Cabinet on his own terms. ~King* Farouk consented after the visit by the British Ambassador, Sir Miles Lampson, to the Palace. The secretary of the Wafd issued a stMlnient that proper implementation of the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty would be the party’s chief aim. The Cairo correspondent of the “Daily Express” says food was the keynote of the threatened political upheaval in Egypt. The introduction of three meatless days made wealthy Egyptians feel that the restriction of supplies was too severe. Then the baking of white bread was forbidden and the Egyptians were unable to understand why an agricultural country could not have white bread, whereas the reason was that considerable wheat land had been given over to the more profitable growing of cotton. As a result the former Premier, Sirry Pasha, came up against the cot-ton-growers when he tried to alter the ration. The astronomical rise in prices also hit the peasants and Civil Service. The Egyptians find it difficult to make sacrifices for a war in which they are technically not involved.
