Mesdames A. F. Stewart (Wairarapa Centre Commandant), Masterton, G. S. Sharp, Featherston, M. Sinclair, Pahiatua, and Miss M. Thurston (hon. secretary), Masterton, attended in Palmerston North yesterday a meeting of the North Island Voluntary Aid Committee of the N.Z. Red Cross Society. The death has occurred of Mr Thomas McNab, mayor of Mt. Eden from 1931 to 1938, says an Auckland Press Association telegram. He was 59 years old, and was a well-known stonemason. He served in the South African War and played in representative Rugby matches in that country. During the 1914-18 war he served as.a lieutenant in the New Zealand Territorial Force. Tributes to two former legislators, whose deaths occurred recently—Mr John Payne, a former member of the House of Representatives, and Mr Dye, M.L.C.—were paid yesterday by the House of Representatives, which adopted resolutions expressing sympathy with their relatives and appreciation of their past services. The resolutions were moved by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, and seconded by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, many other members also speaking. At 3.55 p.m. the House adjourned till 7.30 p.m. as a mark of respect.
The funeral of the late Mrs Murray Jackson, of Masterton, took place yesterday, there being a representative attendance of mourners. The Rev H. S. Kings conducted the service at the residence and that at the graveside. Wreaths were sent by the following: Masterton Methodist Ladies’ Social Guild, Masterton Women’s Missionary Auxiliary, W.C.T.U., and members of the Masterton Methodist Choir, besides others. The pall-bearers were Messrs R. Jamieson, S. Ralph, H. J. Cooper, C. D. Shoosmith, P. R. Welch and E. B. Willis.
