HEAVY BOMBING
SOME FIRES STARTED IN SINGAPORE GARRISON READY & ALERT. MANY TRIGGER-FINGERS ITCHING. LONDON, February 3. Today’s Singapore communique reports that enemy air activity over the island has been considerable during the past 24 hours, with high-level and dive-bombing attacks causing some fires. Military casualties were slight. There was no ground activity against the defences. Our bombers without loss raided Kluang, on the mainland, and damaged enemy transport. American Flying Fortresses have bombed enemy airfields at Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan, and all returned safely. A message states that black smoke floated across Singapore all day from fires which were started by bombs dropped at widely separated points. Firemen isolated the blazes and limited damage. The land forces are on the alert, and an officer said, “There are many fingers itching on the triggers of rifles and machine-guns round the island.”
