ENEMY SURPRISE DEFENDERS FROM TUNNELS IN REAR OF TROOPS. BRITISH OFFICER'S STORY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.20 a.m.) CHUNGKING, January 29. The United Press says British officers today described the Japanese attack) against Hongkong. They said that the enemy suddenly appeared from tunnels behind the defenders, trapping the British between two fires. The officers added that espionage and fifth columnists played a most important pivotal role. For example, fifth columnists had inter-connected air raid shelters and defence tunnels, cut into Hong Kong rocks. Captured Japanese had maps showing in minute detail every defence zone, including the most secret artillery emplacements, munition dumps, pillboxes and antiaircraft guns.
