A staff officer inspecting a batch of recruits asked one of them what his occupation was in civil life. The lad answered, “Baker’s assistant, sir.” “Well,” replied the officer, “bread, you know, is the staff of life.” The recruit, without a blink, countered: “And life on the staff is one long loaf.”
