LANDINGS IN BORNEO
MADE BY JAPANESE FORCES EAST OF SINGAPORE. DUTCH RESISTING STRONGLY. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) RUGBY, January 29. A further Japanese landing in Borneo, this time on the west coast, some 350 miles east of Singapore ,is reported by a Java communique, which states: “Japanese troops landed at Pamangkat, on the west coast of Borneo, south of Kuching, and heavy pressure was exerted on our troops operating in those regions. Notwithstanding firm resistance, the Japanese are obtaining local successes, and Pontianak is being threatened. All important objectives on the spot have been destroyed by us. “Naval aircraft carried out an action against the Japanese landing in the vicinity of Kendari (Celebes), which was effected at two points, and was covered by the fire of Japanese warships. Strong resistance is being continued, and our troops have held their positions. An attack was again carried out on Emmahaven. There were no casualties. Damage was inflicted on ships lying there. “At several points in the outer provinces air activity continues, while the enemy apparently is carrying out much air reconnaissance. “Reports from the vicinity of Balik Papan make it clear that there, too, resistance on our part is stubbornly continuing.” WIPED OUT JAPANESE .FIGHTER PLANE FORMATION. BRITISH & AMERICAN PILOTS’ SUCCESS. (Received This Day, 10 a.m.) RANGOON, January 29. British and American pilots wiped out a Japanese fighter plane formation this afternoon, destroying at least thirteen enemy planes and possibly four more without loss.
