MOTOR FATALITY
LORRY RUNS DOWN SLOPE MAORI BOY KILLED. TWO SISTERS INJURED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER, January 29. A three-year-old Maori boy was killed and his two young sisters were injured when a motor-lorry ran away down Hornsley Road, Napier, today. The victims were: — Killed. Nathaniel Ivan Ryder, aged three, died in hospital. Injured, Monica Ryder, aged four, slight injuries. Mary Anna Ryder, aged two, slight injuries. Members of the Ryder family were being moved with their’ furniture to a house in Hornsby Road. The lorry was being driven by a market gardener, Jimmy Loo. Mangateretere. He stopped about 200 yards up the slope in Hornsby Road, but the lorry began running backward. Quickly gaining speed near the bottom of the slope, the vehicle struck a culvert with considerable force, throwing on to the road those riding on the tray. A rear wheel passed over the boy and he received severe head injuries from which he died shortly afterward. The girls who were injured were missed by the wheels but were struck by the sides of the truck.
